Possible Paradigm Shifts

For my paradigm shift paper, I have no idea what I want to write about yet.  This assignment is going to require a lot of time and research so I want to find a topic I am really interested in.  Despite a lot of brain storming, polling, and researching, I haven’t discovered a topic that has jumped out at me.  But, I have found some topics that are worth considering.

One recent paradigm shift is the major focus on the “instantaneous.”  In today’s society, people want things faster and easier.  Everything takes less time than it used to.  People go through the McDonald’s drive through instead of going to a restaurant to dine.  People get their news in 160 characters on Twitter instead of reading the newspaper.  People use several types of social media and instant messaging on a daily basis instead of writing letters.  People don’t read books like they used to; they just wait for the movie to come out so they can get the whole story in two hours.  Online schooling allows people to earn a degree in a few months instead of attending college for four or more years.  Every aspect of our lives has been changed in order to make things faster.  America thrives on instant gratification instead of hard work and dedication and achieving goals.

Despite how interesting this topic is, it may be too broad and complicated to thoroughly analyze in a five-page paper.  Maybe I will be able to pull one, specific aspect of that discussion aside and write about a narrower topic.

The other topic I am considering is the health food craze.  I am not too knowledgeable about this topic but that is part of what strikes me.  Part of what interests me about this is the idea that this shift occurred in sync with, because of, or in response to the obesity crisis we are facing in America.  It might be interesting to compare the two and find a correlation between them.
